Kinetic liquids and vibrating LED beams celebrate design label Proenza Schouler’s 10th Anniversary in two Barneys New York window displays.

In celebration of Proenza Schouler’s 10th Anniversary and the brand’s long standing relationship with Barney’s New York, the label reissued its Fall 2003 designs as a capsule collection available exclusively at Barneys. Working with Barney’s Creative Director, Dennis Freedman, Patten Studio created two window displays based on designers Jack McCollough and Larazo Hernandez’s first major runway collection.

Lava

Hydraulic pumps circulated dyed glycerin and mineral oil through four custom acrylic chambers, producing a mesmerizing lava-lamp effect. The interplay of these viscous liquids created forms evocative of Proenza Schouler’s intricately woven fabrics.

Flame

Three pillars of fire were synthesized from light, mylar, and sound. Red LED light was focused and bounced onto a Mylar sheet vibrated by a speaker, producing a reflection that danced like an authentic flame.

In addition to creating a spectacle for passersby, the Proenza Schouler windows generated press in fashion and culture outlets like Elle, Frame, Marie Claire, and POPSUGAR. Barneys New York also leveraged documentation of the production process for their web and social media campaigns.
