Three kinetic Beacons transform Rag & Bone's SS17 NY Fashion Week show into an immersive audiovisual experience.

Every spring and fall, designers and brands put on spectacular runway shows in New York to unveil their latest collections at Fashion Week. These shows aren’t just about the clothes—they’re full-on immersive experiences, each vying for the attention of the press, buyers and influencers. For Rag & Bone’s Spring-Summer 2017 collection, TEM Studio and Vincent de Belleval envisioned a kinetic light show that would turn the catwalk into an inverted zoetrope. They reached out to Patten Studio to create the Beacons—three giant, motorized projectors that would spin indefinitely, mapping an immersive light environment.

Rag & Bone models walked the runway to an original score by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke as the Beacons teleported the audience into a series of geometric landscapes and abstract environments. Standing 2.5 meters tall, and weighing in at half a ton each, the Beacons doubled as the sculptural focal point of the runway.

Patten Studio used our custom motor controller board to spin the Beacons under computer control. The Beacons created a persistence of vision optical illusion, mapping a 360 immersive light environment around the catwalk. Fog machines gave these projections three-dimensional shape.

Rag & Bone’s SS17 runway generated press coverage in Vice and Wallpaper*, among other culture and fashion media outlets, with designer Marcus Wainwright widely lauded for his solo debut.
